Overview

Passage des Fous is one of the most scenic expeditions we offer at Ventara. It is a 600 km off-road journey where each day reveals an entirely new desert landscape. We have designed this route to be accessible to everyone — from complete beginners with no off-roading experience to highly experienced drivers. Regardless of your skill level, this expedition will challenge you, push your limits, and elevate your driving experience. Throughout the journey, you will feel as if you are crossing different planets. Certain sections of the route are named Mars and Jupiter, as their landscapes feel truly out of this world. You will also pass through our famous desert maze, one of the most visually striking parts of the expedition. The journey culminates in the Passage des Fous, the most technically demanding section of the route. This final challenge is designed to test everything you have learned during the expedition. We provide 4x4 rentals along with an introductory off-roading course to ensure you are fully prepared for the experience.

Day 01 : Arrival & First Taste of the desert

Welcome to the desert

You leave Cairo early in the morning, watching the city gradually disappear behind you as the landscape opens into the endless Western Desert. By the afternoon, the asphalt gives way to sand, and this is where the real journey begins. In a controlled desert training area, you are introduced to the fundamentals of dune driving—learning how to handle soft sand with confidence, how dunes form and shift, and how to rely on momentum and control rather than hesitation. You also learn how to move safely and smoothly as part of a convoy. At first, everything feels unfamiliar, but gradually confidence replaces doubt as you take your first real tracks across the desert. By evening, you set up camp under a sky untouched by city lights, spending your first night beneath the vast, silent stars of the Sahara.

Day 2 : The Longest Dune in the world Abu Moharek

Into the Endless Dunes

Today, you enter one of the most extraordinary dune systems on Earth—the Abu Moharek Dunes. These vast waves of sand stretch endlessly across the horizon, shaped over thousands of years by wind and time. Along the route, you navigate crescent-shaped dunes, transverse corridors, and wide sand sea fields that constantly shift and challenge your sense of direction. Hidden within this immense landscape lies a remarkable discovery: Djara Cave, carved deep into limestone and preserving traces of ancient climates from a time when this desert was green and alive. As the sun sinks behind the dunes, the sheer scale of the desert becomes overwhelming, and by nightfall, surrounded by silence and starlight, the desert feels truly infinite.

Day 3 : When the desert becomes another planet

A Journey Through Alien Landscapes

The landscape begins to change as new colors emerge where you least expect them—golden sand, deep red earth, and striking shades of purple rock that redefine the meaning of the desert. Today, you explore two of its most surreal regions: the Mars Zone, where vast red plains stretch endlessly into the horizon in complete silence, and the Jupiter Maze, a dreamlike formation of mineral-colored rock that feels more like another planet than Earth, drawing you into a natural maze carved by time. By now, you are no longer simply driving through the desert—you are moving through entire worlds within a world.

Day 4 :The Edge of Passage des Fous

The Calm Before the Challenge

The terrain begins to change as the dunes grow steeper, the valleys deeper, and navigation becomes increasingly demanding. Today is about preparation—both mental and technical—for the challenge that lies ahead. As you venture deeper into the desert, you reach the threshold of a place few travelers ever encounter: Passage des Fous. A vast maze of wind-sculpted dunes stretching in every direction, it demands precision, patience, and true teamwork. As the sun sets over the sand, the atmosphere shifts—the desert grows quieter, heavier, and filled with anticipation. Tomorrow, the real challenge begins.

Day 5 :Passage des Fous

Conquering Passage des Fous

Today marks the culmination of everything leading up to this moment as you enter Passage des Fous—a complex maze of dunes that demands focus, teamwork, and trust. Nothing is rushed or random; every decision carries weight. Steep dune faces, soft sand traps, and hidden lines challenge you at every turn, but with the skills you’ve built and the strength of the group, you move forward step by step—one dune, one section, one victory at a time. Gradually, the impossible becomes achievable until you finally emerge on the other side. What once felt out of reach is now behind you—you haven’t just crossed the desert, you’ve conquered one of the Sahara’s most iconic dune systems. That evening, the camp comes alive with stories, laughter, and celebration under a vast sky of stars.

Day 6: Explore ancient Kharga oasis

The Living Edge of the Desert

After days surrounded by endless dunes, the desert suddenly transforms into a living landscape of palm groves, ancient settlements, and natural springs marking your arrival at Egypt’s Western Desert oases. In Kharga Oasis, you step into a place that has sustained travelers and communities for thousands of years, where history is etched directly into the desert itself. From prehistoric rock art to Pharaonic remnants and Roman temples and fortresses, every site tells the story of human survival and resilience in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

Day 7: Return to cairo

The final Day

As the road turns back toward Cairo, the expedition comes to an end. But the person returning is not the same one who left. You've crossed deserts, conquered dunes, and discovered just how far you're capable of going.
